As of this rant, dozens of people have been killed throughout the Muslim world in riots over offensive cartoons published first in Denmark and Norway. Muslim religious leaders are offering rewards for the cartoonists’ heads. Nigerians are back to killing each other. For weeks now I haven’t known what to say because both parties are in the wrong. The Westerners were insulting. The Muslims were violent. Not a lot of credit to go around. But when all is said and done, I’d rather live next to someone who viciously insults me in the newspaper than next to someone who goes on a bloody rampage when insulted. Some liberals believe that all cultures are equal because every point of view is relative, but not me. I understand that all attempts to “evaluate,” “compare,” and "rank” cultures are, as phenomena of culture, inherently biased. Still, a biased distinction between insult and violence is better than no such distinction. If there comes a time when I have to side with the insulters or the rioters, I’m picking the insulters every time. —JoT Can the West and the Muslim World Coexist?
