One way you can tell that the Muslim world is behind the West in social development is that the West would not permit something as atrocious as female genital mutilation on such a massive scale. Egyptian society permits it even though it’s a pagan tradition from Africa, not a mandate from the Koran or Hadith. Why hasn’t a mullah issued a fatwa against cutting off little girls’ clitorides? Doesn’t Allah form each child in the womb? Are we to believe that He gets it wrong when He creates girls, and that they have to be improved surgically? Why doesn’t the Muslim Brotherhood speak out against it? Because rights, especially women’s rights, just aren’t as important to Mideastern Muslims as they are to Westerners. —JoT |
